Also, YOU CANT TELL WHEN ITS ON THE SECOND TUNER. The integration between the 2 tuners is seemless, you watch tv and record on seperate channels, thats all you know.
The quality is EXACTLY the same as you get on regular directv... no complaints there... ZERO loss of quality on recordings and live tv.
This thing is fantastic, you program in what channels you receive and dont' receive, and it won't suggest shows or anything on the channels you don't receive, wonderful. After a couple weeks of using this, you learn all the tricks to finding great things, when watching tv.. you rate the shows you are watching by pressing a thumbs up or thumbs down on your control, then when you want, you can simply go to TiVo Suggestions and it will suggest shows and like shows to either watch live or record for your convenience. I have tons of Season Passes that TiVo records for me whenever my shows come on, FANTASTIC!!!
Another trick, I always start football games 30 minutes after they start, that way you can fastforward commercials and halftime... then by the end of the game you skipped the commercials and halftime and are caught up to real-time to see the finish. FANTASTIC.
And guys, the system will auto-record whenever you are watching live tv (and only stores it temporarily until you change channels)... this is AWESOME, that means when you are just leisurely watching a show, and miss something, you can just rewind without having to have hit record earlier.
And the ability to control your own instant replays during football games makes this unit worth every cent in gold.. i pause and rewind all the time.
And folks, PLEASE don't waste your money on "the latest receivers" this one has all the options, for almost nothing, if you want more space, just search the internet, you can easily put a 120 gig hard drive in it like I did for more and get 120 hours of recording.
And for the slow menu problems, thats answered on the system, if you press "page up" or "page down" on the remote, it makes it real quick and easy to browse the guide.

DirectTiVo is Crippled – Not fully enabled – Scott C. Hodges – Western PA USA
I’ve had 6 Tivos but up until now, they have all been freestanding (TiVo1 and TiVo2) units. I switched to satellite about a year ago and was thrilled to find that DirecTV was offering Tivos…..Until I brought mine home. What they DON’T tell you is that DirecTV TiVo is designed and built for DirecTV only. It DOES NOT record cable or over the air broadcasts, it DOES NOT support networking (a fantastic feature for getting your schedule via Internet and sharing shows between multiple TiVos in a household) and, because it doesn’t support networking, it also doesn’t support the Home Media Option (which allows you to stream audio and images from your PC to your TiVo). It also doesn’t support web based scheduling requests or the soon to be released TiVo-to-Go. These are all features that are central to the TiVo culture and I’m amazed that DirecTV has crippled their version of the TiVo service. I’d happily pay out the few bucks a month to add a DirecTV unit to my TiVo subscription, but DirecTV doesn’t allow for it.

The long and short of it is that this is not a fully enabled TiVo and there isn’t much you can do about it. If you just want a PVR with a nice interface, this is probably it. But if you want TiVO, as in ALL of TiVo, then skip these direcTV units, buy a regular TiVo and hook it up to you current satellite receiver. Not only can you record over-the-air or cable this way, but you get every one of the TiVo functions that the folks at TiVo have thoughtfully built into thier units.

Well, at first this product was great. Dual receivers worked with my multi-switch and i was able to watch one show while recording another.

For some reason, one of the satellite lines in keeps dropping. The hookups are good and the signal strength continues to show all of the same strengths as the working tuner (they are shown on the screen side by side). However, on a daily basis – I have to reset the receiver (without adjusting any wires) or continue to try reacquiring the information on both inputs.

I really do like the other features of the unit having had a Sony TIVO unit that also had some common flaws. The comment about the slow screens and transitions is accurate. The response of the unit is a little slow and from what I understand, this feature is improved with more expensive units having faster (ie. more expensive) processors.

For the price, I think I paid for the unit while signing a 12-month contract, (my DirecTV contract had already expired) this would be a great unit.

This is the fourth DirecTV receiver in the house (since it is dual – it is really the fourth and fifth receiver with the dual switch purchased from Radio Shack). If the second line didn’t drop periodically and regularly – this would be five stars at the current price point.

The concept of integrating DirecTV twin tuners with digital recording capabilities is brilliant, and the user friendliness of these machines is quite good considering the sophisticated technology. But I’ve only been able to experience it for about six hours before the units fail. Hard drives malfunction, tuners go out; I’m waiting for my third unit. My father has had three bad Philips DSR 7000 before giving up & buying a Hughes unit that has functioned for some time now. The warranty is terrible; 90 days and you have to pay the shipping. Philips should not have put their name on these machines, which all appear identical (RCA, Hughes, Philips) from the same joynt mfr. in Mexico. Mine came from the Philips Employee Store & I’m loyal, but this is pathetic.

Philips HDR312 TiVo 30-Hour Digital Video Recorder Specifications

Unlike analog VCRs, Philips’s HDR312 personal TV receiver uses TiVo technology to store compressed audio-video data to a computer hard disk. When you’re ready to watch a preselected program, the HDR312 retrieves it upon command from a list of shows you’ve recorded.

Among the most revolutionary aspects of the Philips/TiVo server is the ability to pause live broadcasts and either resume a program where you left off or return to the program in real time. Looks and works great. This Series 1 TIVO is a rare one that can be used without a monthly Tivo subscription. Nice way to tinker with Tivo generally see how it works without a big investment or commitment. Just go to Manual Record. Without a subscription you can still pause and rewind live TV, and set manual recordings just like a VCR (for example every monday at 6 PM..or record current program..or schedule a recording for a certain date and certain time and certain channel for any length of time for a one time recording) You can also do the same by simply selecting "Repeat..poor person's Season Pass..alttle humor here on Amazon). Great unit . . Lousy Tech Support/Service – –
I have had a philips hdr312 TIVO unit for about 18 months. I LOVE TIVO. It is amazing and my family are all TIVO lovers. Even my wife, who hates all my electronics, loves tivo. The pause, rewind and Fast forward are awesome. We never start to watch our show until 20 minutes into it so we can zoom through comercials and still end at normal time.

Now the negative . . my units modem went bad, I sent it to Philips, cost + 25 for shipping. Recieved it back 2 weeks later saying “no repair made, no problem found”. Unit was still broken, called service and they agreed I should ship it back (another ). Again, 2 weeks later returned “no repair made, no problem found”. Agian I called philips, they agreed and said they would swap unit with a refurbished unit. I asked that they pay for shipping, they agreed and told me I would recieve a UPS call tag via email with 3-5 days. 3 weeks later and a dozen phone calls, still no call tag and each time I called I was promised by a supervisor I would get it the next day. One Tech support guy told me he’s seen this take up to 30 days to get a UPS call tag and suggested I just pay for shipping myself if I do not want to wait. I asked them how is it that if I wanted to return something to L.L. BEAM, UPS would be at my house the next day, yet philips can’t seem to get one to me for 3 weeks now. His response “were not L.L.BEAM”

At that point, I finally researched the company and contacted the President of the US division. He was wonderful. He was appauled at my story and within 1 hour of talking to him, (still amazed I got him on the phone)I had someone call me to inform me they were shipping overnight a brand new HDR612(The next model up). The unit arrived Friday, but I was not home, so I am waiting for redelivery tommorow.

I was happy to see management was very upset with the service I recieved and how quickly they reacted to my situation. Hopefully, this might shake up the service department and no one else will go through what I went through.

I see quite a few comments on this page about modems and hard drives dying on Series 1 or Series 2 Philips DVR’s (aka, Tivos). Between my family and friends, I know of 12 Tivos that have had NO hard drive or modem problems whatsoever! The first one was purchased almost 4 years ago, too!
The two Tivos that we have had problems with are both Philips Series 1 models. Both have had modem failures. Both have been connected to phone lines that have experienced surges — my brother’s during a thunderstorm and mine due to a 40+ year old wall jack that corroded. I think the folks with multiple Tivo failures need to look at their phone systems!
I do agree, though, that having to pay just to talk to a techie about my dead modem was a bit excessive. I will not do that again. or modem replacement kits are available.

No doubt Tivo is the invention of the millenium, if you love TV (especially sports) like I do. But Phillips Tivo units are the worst electronic product I think I have ever purchased. There is a reason their warranty is ‘limited’ and after 90 days you will pay something to get it fixed. Every Phillips Tivo unit I’ve had, including the new 7000 unit, has broken in under a year, but over the 90 day full guarantee. And don’t think you are actually going to talk to someone at Phillips, not without giving them your credit card # you aren’t. Unfortunately, it appears the new Directv Tivo units are made by Phillips. Ugh. Bad choice, Directv.

That being said, I have been given 3 defective units. The first unit shipped to me would not boot up. I returned this to Amazon (very nice returns process, btw) for a new unit. After 2 months, the tuner on the new unit failed. This one was returned to TiVo, who shipped me a new unit. This third unit had the incorrect software installed on it (the 30-hour-unit software). TiVo tech support helped me correct this issue by having the unit dial in and download the correct software version. So far, there haven't been any problems since then.

On the plus side of all the problems I've had, I can say that TiVo's customer support is excellent, and a pleasure to deal with. I just wish their Quality Assurance was as good.

Even with all the problems, I have still recommended TiVo to my friends and co-workers, and I will continue to do so.]

Without TiVo, what’s the point of TV? – Paul LoveKing – Atlanta GA
I bought one of the early models of TiVo, and added drive space to make it a 110 hour unit. I wouldn’t bother watching TV without it. It really is everything it promises. I don’t know what time a lot of my programs come on, or what day of the week, I just watch them when I feel like watching them. I have a one year old daughter, and I would especially reccomend TiVo to new parents. Without the ability to pause, or just stop and come back to it later, a new parent can’t expect to watch anything all the way through.

Setup may be a bit complex, but once it’s in place, it is simple to operate. My mother in law can figure it out when she comes to town. She can’t figure out our X-10 remote control lights, or her own e-mail, but she can set TiVo to record her programs and figure out what she wants to watch. If she can do it, anyone can.

We use our TiVo so much we are planning on getting one for the little TV in our bedroom.

We never even heard of TIVO until our children gave us one last Christmas. The TIVO came with a lifetime subscription which made it even better. We are retired and not exactly “Hi Tech” people, so we paid someone recommended by our excellent store, Sound Advice” to hook it up and educate us in the use, etc. This service was great, as we also had to hook up a DVD player to the TV (a gift from another of our kids). There is nothing easier to program for recording. No tapes, no fuss . As sports fans we particularly like the ability to do our own instant replay. I no longer dread the telephone or doorbell interupting “Jeopardy”, as I can pause the program and pick it up later. I recommend this product to everyone that loves TV.

No problems here, I get everything.
Also, YOU CANT TELL WHEN ITS ON THE SECOND TUNER. The integration between the 2 tuners is seemless, you watch tv and record on seperate channels, thats all you know.
The quality is EXACTLY the same as you get on regular directv... no complaints there... ZERO loss of quality on recordings and live tv.
This thing is fantastic, you program in what channels you receive and dont' receive, and it won't suggest shows or anything on the channels you don't receive, wonderful. After a couple weeks of using this, you learn all the tricks to finding great things, when watching tv.. you rate the shows you are watching by pressing a thumbs up or thumbs down on your control, then when you want, you can simply go to TiVo Suggestions and it will suggest shows and like shows to either watch live or record for your convenience. I have tons of Season Passes that TiVo records for me whenever my shows come on, FANTASTIC!!!
Another trick, I always start football games 30 minutes after they start, that way you can fastforward commercials and halftime... then by the end of the game you skipped the commercials and halftime and are caught up to real-time to see the finish. FANTASTIC.
And guys, the system will auto-record whenever you are watching live tv (and only stores it temporarily until you change channels)... this is AWESOME, that means when you are just leisurely watching a show, and miss something, you can just rewind without having to have hit record earlier.
And the ability to control your own instant replays during football games makes this unit worth every cent in gold.. i pause and rewind all the time.
And folks, PLEASE don't waste your money on "the latest receivers" this one has all the options, for almost nothing, if you want more space, just search the internet, you can easily put a 120 gig hard drive in it like I did for more and get 120 hours of recording.
And for the slow menu problems, thats answered on the system, if you press "page up" or "page down" on the remote, it makes it real quick and easy to browse the guide.
In conclusion, this is the BEST TiVo deal you can find, don't waste money on anything else, no problems at all with the unit. FANTASTIC!!!!]

I’m not sure what the other reviewer is complaining about when saying that the TiVo isn’t picking up channels and is unreliable.
No problems here, I get everything.
Also, YOU CANT TELL WHEN ITS ON THE SECOND TUNER. The integration between the 2 tuners is seemless, you watch tv and record on seperate channels, thats all you know.
The quality is EXACTLY the same as you get on regular directv… no complaints there… ZERO loss of quality on recordings and live tv.
This thing is fantastic, you program in what channels you receive and dont’ receive, and it won’t suggest shows or anything on the channels you don’t receive, wonderful. After a couple weeks of using this, you learn all the tricks to finding great things, when watching tv.. you rate the shows you are watching by pressing a thumbs up or thumbs down on your control, then when you want, you can simply go to TiVo Suggestions and it will suggest shows and like shows to either watch live or record for your convenience. I have tons of Season Passes that TiVo records for me whenever my shows come on, FANTASTIC!!!

DirectTiVo is Crippled – Not fully enabled – Scott C. Hodges – Western PA USA
I’ve had 6 Tivos but up until now, they have all been freestanding (TiVo1 and TiVo2) units. I switched to satellite about a year ago and was thrilled to find that DirecTV was offering Tivos…..Until I brought mine home. What they DON’T tell you is that DirecTV TiVo is designed and built for DirecTV only. It DOES NOT record cable or over the air broadcasts, it DOES NOT support networking (a fantastic feature for getting your schedule via Internet and sharing shows between multiple TiVos in a household) and, because it doesn’t support networking, it also doesn’t support the Home Media Option (which allows you to stream audio and images from your PC to your TiVo). It also doesn’t support web based scheduling requests or the soon to be released TiVo-to-Go. These are all features that are central to the TiVo culture and I’m amazed that DirecTV has crippled their version of the TiVo service. I’d happily pay out the few bucks a month to add a DirecTV unit to my TiVo subscription, but DirecTV doesn’t allow for it.

The long and short of it is that this is not a fully enabled TiVo and there isn’t much you can do about it. If you just want a PVR with a nice interface, this is probably it. But if you want TiVO, as in ALL of TiVo, then skip these direcTV units, buy a regular TiVo and hook it up to you current satellite receiver. Not only can you record over-the-air or cable this way, but you get every one of the TiVo functions that the folks at TiVo have thoughtfully built into thier units.

Great idea – dual receivers – drops second line repeatedly – T. Thorson – San Jose, CA
Well, at first this product was great. Dual receivers worked with my multi-switch and i was able to watch one show while recording another.

For some reason, one of the satellite lines in keeps dropping. The hookups are good and the signal strength continues to show all of the same strengths as the working tuner (they are shown on the screen side by side). However, on a daily basis – I have to reset the receiver (without adjusting any wires) or continue to try reacquiring the information on both inputs.

I really do like the other features of the unit having had a Sony TIVO unit that also had some common flaws. The comment about the slow screens and transitions is accurate. The response of the unit is a little slow and from what I understand, this feature is improved with more expensive units having faster (ie. more expensive) processors.

For the price, I think I paid for the unit while signing a 12-month contract, (my DirecTV contract had already expired) this would be a great unit.

This is the fourth DirecTV receiver in the house (since it is dual – it is really the fourth and fifth receiver with the dual switch purchased from Radio Shack). If the second line didn’t drop periodically and regularly – this would be five stars at the current price point.

The concept of integrating DirecTV twin tuners with digital recording capabilities is brilliant, and the user friendliness of these machines is quite good considering the sophisticated technology. But I’ve only been able to experience it for about six hours before the units fail. Hard drives malfunction, tuners go out; I’m waiting for my third unit. My father has had three bad Philips DSR 7000 before giving up & buying a Hughes unit that has functioned for some time now. The warranty is terrible; 90 days and you have to pay the shipping. Philips should not have put their name on these machines, which all appear identical (RCA, Hughes, Philips) from the same joynt mfr. in Mexico. Mine came from the Philips Employee Store & I’m loyal, but this is pathetic.
